It was explained to me last nite that the reason there is such a short running time for videos is that any longer and in Europe the camera is then considered a video camera with additional taxes. So to avoid those taxes the limit to videos were set as they are. So hacking them to take longer videos will probably do no harm to the camera.

Hey guys, I have a question. In the case where I am shooting a wedding video, what would be my best bet? I have a D5100...will I have to carry a couple of memory cards and swap when each memory card reaches its limit? Or, if I have a 64GB card, will I be able to restart the recording after it reaches its limit on the same card?

Each video recording will still be space limited to the 3.5gb for that video.

Thus if you have more than 3.5gb free you could start recording a second video after the first finishes. Thus with 35gb free you could record ~10 max length video.

Works for me! Thanks!

For anyone who wasn't sure where to get the firmware from, I found it on the Nikon D5100 page: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers ... 01-upgrade.

Ok, scratch that. Upon closer inspection video performance seems spotty at best. Every third video or so has an absolutely horrible frame rate. We're talking something around 2 frames per second. Audio quality is wonderful, and the versions which start out great seem to stay that way. But if it starts out at 2 frames per second, it sticks around until the end of the video. Any ideas?
