Here is a 30 second dark with my D4 and without the software applied

And here is a 30 second dark with the software applied

I just am planning to worst case scenario of not having my laptop in the field, which is why I want a way to apply this software as a firmware update ha!

Canon's black level looks like artificial. It won't change much after accumulation of dark current.

It is the case in new EXPEED 4 as well. As long as the entire distribution is preserved, there's no point setting it higher.

Dear astronomer,

Thank you very much for your quick answer.
Well, so it seems to be an open question why Canon has raised its black level at the very cost of the dynamic range, which is crucial nowadays for makers to enhance marketing climate for their products.

Have a nice weekend
