Crushing blacks in-camera

Postby Grant Harding » Sat Jul 29, 2017 3:18 pm

I have a Nikon D3100, which I want to hook up to a projector to project live video onto a screen.

I want to crush the blacks (or, failing that, just crank up the contrast) of the live video. Is there a way to do this in-camera? Or can it only be done in post?

I've Googled around, but all I can find is tips for avoiding high contrast.

A user on another forum suggested using Picture Control Utility to make a custom Picture Control, but this camera model can't open custom Picture Controls.

Thanks!

Hi!

Have you played around with the Picture Profiles (In the SHOOTING MENU there should be SET PICTURE CONTROL). It should affect the liveview too. Try modifying the standard picture profile with more contrast.

I modified my picture control to have less contrast, because I'm primarily shooting video and I want to have as bigger room as possible when color correcting and color grading.

Thanks! I found that increasing the contrast, while at the same time deliberately underexposing, worked pretty well.
