Nikon D5200 Firware Hack?

Postby sunra108 » Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:35 pm

Greetings,

Is there a hack to extend the length of the video time for the D5200?
Something like the hack for the D5100?

Sure could use more than the 20 minute limit for 1080P, 30fps.

Thank you,

S.

For now, the rule is "we can only patch a camera if an official firmware update has been released for it".

So just refer to this page and see if A and B firmware updates are available for the camera you're interested in.
(hint: not the case for the D5200).
Now the fact that an update has been made available does not automatically mean we can or will work on it of course. It's just a prerequisite.

This should probably end up in a sticky FAQ somewhere.

Hi Vicne,

I just made an account to say this
there's an official firmware update for the D5200!!
https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answer ... FIbA%3D%3D

can you guys please have a look at it and see if you're able to hack it?
(a longer video recording time and a bitrate hack would be the most important things I guess)

there are a lot of people who would appreciate it :)

thanks in advance!

Even if current hack applied, you can have ~22min at 1080p 30fps, because FAT32 limit applies (4GB files). Solving this is something different as porting existing hacks.
Something like the hack for the D5100?

FAT32 limitation is not solved on D5100.

The FAT32 limitation is not an issue when using EXFAT, right? Easy way to get around that.

On another note, is there any plans to support the d5200 with Nikon Patch? The 20 minute recording "feature" is my only complaint with this camera.

Thanks!

If it is so easy, then I will be happy to test your patch for this.

Unfortunately, you can't work blind and completely without hardware. The main problem is that nobody of developers has D5200. And low donation level do not allow us to get hands on every camera model. So to plan or not to plan (citate).

I was very close to releasing a battery patch for the D5200 so 3rd party batteries could be used, but i wasn't willing to gamble with other peoples
equipment, i've done it once before for the D3200, as user wanted this patch desperately and lucky enough i pulled it off, but i wasn't happy
with myself for doing this.

No need to explain the rest, coderat has done this for me. ;)

I will take a look at the D5200 Firmware and see if i'm able to port the video patch over to this cam.

It has ARM processor, not FR80 ;)

Thanks coderat ;) i seem to recall Simeon has already mentioned this before... D5200, D7100 upwards is ARM.
Or someone has his identity over on MLF...j/k :)

EDIT: I had to see for myself and fw B clearly says ARM.

Hey guys,

I agree that the exFAT solution solves the problem of filesizes above 4GB.
All what is left is allowing the camera to write a long enough video.
I am really interesting in removing the time-based video restrictions from the D5200 firmware.
While I am not one of the core-developers, I have some reasonable programming skill.
Please contact me so we can discuss whether it is possible for me to add this fix.

Thanks,
