MOVED: Quick Question about D5200/D5300

First, I want to thank the hard working developers that are trying to make this happen. I have HUGE respect for ANY ONE who is working on this. It still amazes me what people like you all can do when it comes to reverse engineering code and coming up with ways to improve other people's experiences. I appreciate so much that people like you all actually care enough to share your work so we can benefit from amazing generosity.

Anyway, my question is probably really dumb and simple but I have to ask. I love Nikon. I love how they look, I love how they perform and I even love their branded lenses. With that said, I am currently looking to upgrade my Nikon D3200 to the D5200 or D5300 especially since I saw the video quality be comparable to a 5D Mark III. The ONLY thing that is holding me back is the whole Magic Lantern thing but I really DO NOT want to switch over to Canon but given how much quality is increased shooting RAW video, it is something I am considering.

So I guess I have a few easy to answer questions. Will this firmware allow me to shoot RAW video with either of those cameras I mentioned? Also, the T5i gives pretty poor video performance in comparison to the D5200/D5300, especially in the dynamic range and low light situations. Would you say that the D5200/D5300 stock quality is still better than a T5i with ML?

I am so sorry if these questions are super newbish or annoying to anyone. I am just new at this and really do not like the noise the D3200 gives in low light and I am looking to do everything I can to improve my quality in ISO 3200+. Even thought ISO 1600 is still pretty noisy on the D3200.

Thank you very much and again, YOU GUYS ROCK.

The only thing that canon ML has over my d5200 is focus peaking and zebras.

When I bough my d5200 I compared the t3i, and the t5i has the same video performance:
- t3i have aliasing and moire, the d5200 have none
- t3i have very low resolution, almost like standard def uprezzed. The d5200 may look soft straigh from the camera, but reacts very well with post sharpening
- Raw workflow is very cumberstone, and is mature only in the 5ds, in the rebels the resolution drops to almost standard def again. Have something to do with media interface, sd cards vs cf cards
- The dynamic range gap is huge, more with flaat 11. Yes, it brings more noise but it can be hidden (-10% shadows down in post, maybe neat denoiser and filmic grain)
So in my opinión the nikons are a better option. The d5300 have no hack, but also have no fixed pattern noise, so you can go up in iso without fear

Well, it depends of your budget. When I bough my d5200 i had money just for this or a t3i. With more money maybe went to some dedicated large sensor video camera, and miss the oportunity of great pictures. I think Nikon will still be around when the 4k era arrives (still not) as a quality still-video camera maker. Panasonic (almost out of the picture) and Sony (pioneering) aims to digital cinema (Canon also, slow and expensive), but Nikon aim to photographers and news repórters who make video pieces. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is as I see the panorama

I'm pretty well known in the Panasonic hacking community and have used Lumix GH1 and GH2 cameras extensively, as well as Nikon D5100, D5200, and D800 cameras, for both video and photo work. I love the look and lack of moire produced by the Panasonics, but in three important areas, they cannot compete with Nikon:

* Shadow details (i.e. dynamic range)
* Noise level (i.e. high-ISO performance)
* 14-bit RAW color depth (i.e. grading latitude)

For well-lit daytime shots, Lumix GH cameras produce gorgeous crisp still and motion picture images, and if that was all I needed, I'd be fine with a hacked GH2. Much of what I shoot, however, are ambient and stage-lit nightclub scenes that demand all the sensitivity I can squeeze out of the camera. The footage must also stand up to post-production torture without a trace of banding or telltale digital artifacts. For that, I rely on Nikon, as the Panasonics cannot really be pushed past ISO 800.
