Firmware Patch v1.0

As noted on my blog, we have released Firmware Patch v1.0

Use the online patch tool instead of the original tool.

To use:

Download the D5100 firmware
Download the FirmwarePatch tool
From a command prompt run the patch tool with the first argument pointing to the location of the above firmware
Copy the resulting output to your SD card and remove the ".patched" extension
Upgrade firmware from D5100 menu, as per the normal Nikon instructions

This should not brick your camera, but if it does I and the other Nikon Hacker team members will not have/take responsibility for any damages or liability. I have this firmware on my camera, and have taken a 25 minute video with it, but result may vary. Also damages that may occur due to camera operation times longer than specified by original manufacturer are your responsibility.

The patch for the D3100 works a treat, will be carrying out stress test to see if protection exist for the sensor overheating.

Hi Simeon,

After some beta testing, I think father time has us pegged at 59 minutes, regardless of the 4GB FAT32 limit. What reasons do I have to say this?
The video modes and corresponding maximum recording times with an empty 16GB card as reported on a D5100 are:
1080p 30 frame high quality - ~24 minutes
1080p 30 frame normal quality - ~42 minutes
1080p 24 frame high quality - ~24 minutes
1080p 24 frame normal quality - ~42 minutes
720p 30 frame high quality - ~42 minutes
720p 30 frame normal quality - ~59 minutes
720p 24 frame high quality - ~49 minutes
720p 24 frame normal quality - ~59 minutes
640p 30 frame high quality - ~59 minutes
640p 30 frame normal quality - ~59 minutes

As you can see, after 720p at 24 frames high quality, an asymptote forms up to 59 minutes regardless of the further downgrade in video quality.
Did you come across any subroutines relating to the VBR? It would be a joy to unleash uncompressed 1080p HD even if in short bursts due to file size.

regards,
Martin
