Hi Astronomer,

Will this menu option be available for our use within say a month from now? I am starting travel for photography and it would be great to have this feature for my D800 and D4 =) Again, thank you for the hard work!

Great job astronomer! Would it also be possible to have a separate menu hack to just to enable nef compression off for the supported models.

D600 and dark current enabler tool.

Postby russ01 » Fri Apr 17, 2015 5:27 am

I have tested the dark current enabler tool with my D600 and it works fine. My question is if I go out and take a heap of light and dark frames with the dark current enabler tool running on the D600 can I then just load the NEF files into DSS and stack them as normal or do I need to calibrate the images before dark frame subtraction and stacking? Is there anything I need to do to the files before loading them into DSS or do I just treat them as normal image files?

DSS seems to be problematic if you're not temperature stabilized. I don't know how it performs the normalization.

Maxim DL works pretty good. However you'll need to turn On an option which enables "minimal variance" based normalization.

I'm going merge this post to my main thread.

Thanks for your help astronomer. I just need to wait for a cloud free night to test it all out properly.

DSS also has a dark optimization function, although I can never confirm whether it actually works or how well it works.

DSS can take the NEF files produced by the dark current enabler tool. No need to do anything. Just load the NEF images to DSS like normal NEF files.
