Dark Current Enable Tool

Postby astronomer » Tue Sep 09, 2014 6:11 pm

Hi,

I'm releasing the tools here to disable RAW pre-processing pipeline for astrophotography or scientific imaging use (photometry, spectrum...). The effect is only transient due to RAM modification instead of writing the Flash memory. And will return to normal once power cycle or camera metering system goes asleep. It's suggested to increase "Auto-meter off delay" in "custom setting menu". The RAM mod means it's safer than firmware patch. But still, we do not take liability on any damage that might just incur, so use at your own risk.

Usage:
Turn off "High ISO NR" and "Long Exposure NR" first, then connect USB cable between camera and computer. Lastly turn on camera and run the program.

Tested Model:
D5100
D7000
D3100 (Uncompressed RAW)
D3200 (Uncompressed RAW)
D800/D800E
D600 (HPS not completely off, deep shadow might have elevated noise due to Nikon's way of HPS)

Untested:
D610
D4
DF

Best,
Astronomer

Thanks a lot! works on the d3200
edit: the only problem i have come across is when zooming into a photo the picture gets distorted. if i powercycle the camera the problem disappears. when using your tool photos have a pink tint on them is that normal i am not into astrophotography. i am just testing this to help u guys out its the least i can do.

It turns off "all-fixing" , distortion, colour correction, hot pixel suppression... Thus your seeing what your sensor actually takes for the picture.

Thanks for the testing! What do you mean by distorted when zoomed in?
All the other phenomenon you had described are completely normal.

If possible, could you send me a RAW file of 30 seconds exposure with lens cap on at ISO 400?

Thanks,
astronomer

From the JPEG preview it does not seems the program has taken effect? Are you sure the same image displayed pinkish tint in camera preview?

Thanks,

I see the problem. You probably have the long exposure noise reduction on. Try turn that off and High ISO NR off as well.

yes that fixed it sorry now the long exposure raw file has the pink tint http://d-h.st/llI . the distortion when zooming into the camera preview is still there but goes away when power cycled.other than that everything works. great job man.
