I quickly put a video together showing a Nikon D5100 having manual control over shutter speed and ISO,
in liveview, this is work in progress.

Auto-exposure is disabled as well, I guess? As in, the exposure set by your ISO and SS is always locked to what you set.

Does the Fn button + wheel ISO selection works?

Yes the Fn button can be assigned for ISO and this works in liveview.

Wow ACCESS, that's amazing!
:text-thankyoublue:

So, was it a matter of redirecting the commands to interact with the parts, changing the timing of the sampling, or you just found the culprits and removed them?
How did you do it?
Is the aperture different or you just haven't approached it yet?

Quick answer: it was already in the software and turned off/on by eeprom. What we are not tracing is how the software listen to those bits, and thus how to turn on/off without fiddling with the eeprom.

So they (Nikon) did go through extra effort to make Manual a Semi-automatic setting instead of it being an unfortunate trade-off in capability or whatever their excuse. This helps so incredibly much, for I never knew what the real numbers were on my shoots--were the ISO and shutter speed actually what they said they were or not. I just couldn't trust the camera in Manual and I had to shoot that way. I've been wasting a lot of customer's time and losing the confidence of the people waiting on me to get the camera calibrated.

Thank you all, so very much.

Maybe Nikon was going to release D5100 with manual control in liveview and decided not to, i don't think we'll know the answer to this.
If we was to release this, it would consist 2 patches, 1. patch eeprom to enable the feature, 2. patch FR so the menu isn't visible but still,
enabled which i've tested and works, but the way forward is not to fiddle with the eeprom just as simeon described, plus there isn't a way
updating the eeprom when updating main firmware, what i know of anyway.
