Here's the link to the Patch tool:

http://simeonpilgrim.com/nikon-patch/nikon-patch.html

You'll need to download a copy of a usable firmware release, open it so that the BIN file is output somewhere on your computer so that the patch tool can be directed to it, and then us the newly patched version to update your camera. Make sure the patched version is named exactly like its factory written original so the camera will grab it.

I think this is the link to the D5100_0101 that you'll need to start with:

Hi,

I've just come across this thread and I'd like to have a go at patching my D5100 so that I can use manual controls in live view. My question is that all of the discussion on this thread revolves around using firmware version D5100_0101.bin, however I've just gone to the Nikon site to download the firmware and they only have the next version, D5100_0102.bin.

So my question is, will it work if I try to patch version D5100_0102.bin? If not does anyone know where I can get hold of the older version D5100_0101.bin?

Many thanks

Beta version of patch works with 1.02. My D5100 is flashed with patched 1.02, including manual Lv/video controls, and everything works as expected.

Just for curiosity: do you plan that sometime the new features will be available via menu items?

As an example: in case you update the firmware with the 'manual control in liveview' feature, then you will not really be able to use the manual mode in live view with an external manual flash.
As an example in a darker room when using a manual flash you set the iso to low (event to ISO 100) shutter to 1/160 and you will see nothing in liveview.
Ok, I could use the non-liveview mode in such a case but for me it seems that the focusing is more accurate and reliable in darker scenes if I'm in liveview than in non-liveview.

Oh yes, all via onboard menu's is the end goal.

But getting from a one minute walk, to completing a marathon, is a large amount of training/work.

Hi
Does anyone know if its possible to apply a different flashed version of firmware after you've already done it once?
For example on my d5100, I have patched v1.02 to allow manual controls in live view. I then decided I wanted to add additional features -(non brand battery) so I patched through firmware again, this time selecting multiple features. However when I try to update to this firmware, the camera does nothing. I assume this is because it sees that v1.02 on the SD card is same as the installed version.
Any ideas?

First of all, I must give my thanks to the hackers making this mod possible.

A question though... I understand that aperture control has not been established yet in this hack, so what exactly is happening when I make aperture adjustments with a lens? What f-stop does the camera/lens combo default to? I have a small collection of old Nikon and Nikkor MF lenses, so I don't have an issue with the lack of aperture control often, but when using my Tokina 11-16mm it is a different story.

Thank you for any and all replies!
